چکیده

Ž The predictability of Lagrangian particle trajectories in the Adriatic Sea a semi-enclosed sub-basin of the Mediterranean . Sea over a period of 1–2 weeks is investigated using three clusters consisting of 5–7 drifters. The analysis is conducted using a Gauss–Markov Lagrangian particle model, which relies on the estimate of climatological mean flow field, persistence of turbulence, and assimilation of velocity data from the surrounding drifters through a Kalman filtering

Predictability of Particle Trajectories in the Ocean

1) A comprehensive testing and validation of a method, which relies on assimilation of Lagrangian data into Lagrangian particle models in order to estimate the velocity field in the vicinity of buoy trajectories and to address the problem of prediction of Lagrangian trajectories have been completed, leading to the publication of 3 papers (Ozgokmen et al., 2000a; Castellari et al., 2001; Ozgokme...

A Lagrangian subgridscale model for particle transport improvement and application in the Adriatic Sea using the Navy Coastal Ocean Model

An accurate estimation of Lagrangian transport in the ocean is important for a number of practical problems such as dispersion of pollutants, biological species, and sediments. Forecasting of the Lagrangian pathways necessarily relies on the accuracy of ocean and coastal models. However, these models include a number of errors that propagate directly from the Eulerian velocity field to the Lagr...

Drifter dispersion in the Adriatic Sea: Lagrangian data and chaotic model

We analyze characteristics of drifter trajectories from the Adriatic Sea with recently introduced nonlinear dynamics techniques. We discuss how in quasienclosed basins, relative dispersion as function of time, a standard analysis tool in this context, may give a distorted picture of the dynamics. We further show that useful information may be obtained by using two related nonasymptotic indicato...

Relative dispersion in the Adriatic Sea: Lagrangian data and chaotic model

We perform a data analysis of trajectories of surface drifters deployed in the Adriatic Sea, and compare the results with a kinematic model. We show that, in the case of quasi-closed basins, the standard approach in terms of the diffusion coefficient gives poor information. In fact, the standard linear law for the dispersion cannot hold before finite-scale saturation effects set in. Other quant...

Relative dispersion from a high-resolution coastal model of the Adriatic Sea

Synthetic drifter trajectories computed from velocity data produced by a high-resolution NCOM model are used to investigate the scaling of relative dispersion and the distribution of finite-scale Lyapunov exponent (FSLE) fields in the Adriatic Sea. The effects of varying degrees of spatial and temporal filtering of the input Eulerian velocity fields on the Lagrangian statistics are investigated...
